What Is Your Recommendation (Dietary) For People With Stress? I would like to know if there is a malaysian food (breakfast) which contains high complex carbohydrates. What is your recommendation (dietary) for people with stress?

You can make several local breakfast with high complex carbohydrates. Basically, many plant products contain high complex carbohydrate eg those based on cereals (eg rice products and wheat products). Tubers also contain high complex carbohydrates and can be used for breakfast. Several of these products also contain high sugar content. Choose varieties with less sugar or make your own. There is no special dietary recommendations for people with stress. They must still have a balanced diet with a variety of food items. They should eat well and exercise to control the stress.

Please Suggest To Me The Best Brand For Food Supplement In Malaysian Market. Please suggest to me the best brand for food supplement in Malaysian market. The most trusted one, with moneyback satisfaction guarantee.

We are not able to give you such a recommendation as you requested. We do not endorse any particular brand of supplement or any food product. I would suggest you discuss with a nutritionist or dietitian on the needs of taking supplements before you even decide what brand you need to buy. Find out if you really need supplements; which type; for how long should you take them, etc. IN general, dietary supplements are not necessary if a person eats according to the dietary guidelines of the Ministry of Health. Visit our website (nutriweb.org.my) for healthy eating tips.

I Would Like To Know If It Is Possible For Us To Invite You To Give A Talk On Nutrition To Our PERNAS Staff And Club Members? I am a member of the PERNAS Sports Club. I would like to know if it is possible for us to invite you to give a talk on nutrition to our PERNAS staff and Club members ? If yes, what are the pocedures in order for us to do so ? And also the fees ?

Yes, members of the Nutrition Society of Malaysia do give talks to various organizations. Either myself or other council members can do that, depending on our availability on the time you have in mind. The Society does not expect a fee for the talk, but it would be good to give a honorarium to the nutritionist giving the talk. It should be at least 1 hour talk, preferably 1.5 hours, to allow for some time to ask questions. We would prefer to have a rather large audience so as to make it worth the while. Let us know your date. The Society also does screening of various risk factors of heart disease, including blood cholesterol and sugar, body weight, height, body fat, blood pressure and provide nutrition advice. For this we have to charge a fee as the cost of these screening are rather expensive and also tedious. We can also discuss these screening if you are interested. Do contact me by e-mail, or by phone.

What’s The Different Either I Persued My Studies In Singapore Polytechnic (Food Science and Nutrition) Or Applied Local University? I’m a ordinary girl from a village, my ambition was to became a Nutrition. That was a problem if i didn’t known about the relavant career after my graduate. Whenever i graduated my studies, is it posible for me to apply to became the NSM member? What’s the different either i persued my studies in Singapore Polytechnic (Food Science and Nutrition) or applied local University? I just confused about the future (career) when i finished my graduate, what a pleasure to get your direct.

Yes, you can apply to be a NSM member when you graduate.Of course I would recommend to study locally, eg UKM or UPM. Another important point is that local universities give degrees in BSc Nutrition. It is better than B SC Food science and nutrition, if you want to be a nutritionists. I think you should get a chance to speak to a nutritionist and other professionals before you decide. It is very difficult to discuss over the e-mail like this.

Is There Any Nutrition Courses Currently Available In Malaysia? I am interested to pursue a Degree in Nutrition. Is there any courses currently available in Malaysia? I would appreciate it if you be able to assist.

Definitely. For example the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and Universiti Putra Malaysia conducts degree courses in nutrition, up to PhD level. Universiti Malaysia Sabah and UKM also conducts courses in Fd Science and Nutrition. You will have to check with these universities for details. But basically you will need a STPM to gain entry.

Can I Take Up A Nutrition Course – Online, Offcampus? I have been going through your website and need help – where can i take up a nutrition course – online, offcampus?

I do not think there is any nutrition course online or off campus in this country. There are several universities offering nutrition course, full time, a 3-year course.

Nutrition Course In Penang ? I wish to take the nutrition course in penang, can you please kindly to recommend me with college have provided this course.

You did not provide details of the course you intend to take. For example, is it a undergraduate course you are planning ? or is it a non-degree short course ? Anyway, the universities providing degree courses in nutrition are in Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia and in Universiti Putra Malaysia. There is no nutrition basic degree course in Universiti Sains Malaysia, Penang. I would encourage you to look into the website of these universities, which may provide you with more information.

How Do I Become A Registered Nutritionist? I’m a graduate in Nutrition & Community Health from UPM since March last year. I have found that it’s very difficult to get a job if I’m not a registered Nutritionist. So how do I go about being one. I hope you could help me. Thank you.

There is no requirement in this country to register as a nutritionist before one can practice nutrition. No yet any way. The proposed law is still not passed. If you have difficulty to get a job as a nutritionist, it is certainly not because you are not registered. I guess the people you approached do not have posts for nutritionists or they do not appreciate nutrition graduates. Are you a member of the Nutrition Society of Malaysia ? I would encourage you to be.

Qualifications As A Dietetian In Malaysia ? Hai, I am currently a student in University of Nebraska at Omaha in the United States. I am from Malaysia. My major is Nutrition Science and I am graduating in May 2002. My question is if I want to be dietitian in a hospital, what kind of requirement do I need? For example, do I need any working experience or take a professional examination? Could you please give more information about the qualifications as a dietetian in Malaysia to work in a hospital? I do hope that I can work in Malaysia after I graduated. Thank you!

You are addressing the question to the wrong organisation. We are the Nutrition Society of Malaysia !! Not dietitians. I do know however that with just a nutrition science degree, you may not practice as a dietitian in Malaysia. But do find out from the correct people: the Malaysian Dietitian’s Association. You are however welcome to join us a nutritionists ! You can be our member.

Qualifications To Be A Nutritionist? Could you kindly provide information on what educational programme I can embark upon to bacome a qualified Nutritionist? I do not think I qualify for a place at UPM. Could you suggest a good educational insitute I may apply to?

The official organisations conducting nutrition courses in the country are UKM, UPM, UMS (in Sabah). You may try some overseas universities, such as Australia. But I do not have names of these universities and their addresses. You can try to check the web and e-mail them to ask. Give them your results and ask them. I would be careful about the correspondence courses on nutrition that some organsiations are promoting. Some of them may not be qualified to conduct such courses and as such their degrees may not be recognised.

Is Goat’s Milk Or Cow’s Milk Is Most Similar To Human Milk Content? Hello, i would like to know whether goat’s milk or cow’s milk is most similar to our human milk content ? Which is better for infant to consume? Thank you.

The best milk for infants to consume is human milk, that is mother’s milk. You must really try to breastfeed your infant as there is no milk (whether goat’s or cow’s milk) that can replace mother’s milk. If you really have to, then you can rely on one of the formulas in the market. I do not think there is a great difference between milk of goat or of cow. Anyway, the companies can add several nutrients inside.

Why Malaysian Recommended Fruits Intake Is Different? I noticed in your food pyramid that the “health tip” recommended taking fruits as dessert. I have read in many other nutrition publications that fruits ought to be taken either 1-1.5 hours before food intake or 1-1.5 hours after food intake to enable optimum absorption of the vitamins. Why this difference in opinion by Malaysian nutritionists?

Interesting point. Not from the fruits perspective, but rather from the point of “who is giving the nutrition information”. It is also not a question of Malaysian or other countries. Firstly, check the source of your information. Are these qualified nutritionists ? If yes, where are they attached to ? Are the authorities in nutrition, eg from the ministries of heatlh or world health organisation ? Our dietary guidelines are from the Ministry of Health Malaysia, the authoritive source of information on nutrition. If you also check the Ministry of Health of other countries, including the world health organsiation, you will see our recommendations is the same as theirs. We realise there are some schools of thought who have different views from the dietary guidelines from the health authorities of the world. These are the minority and we do not believe there is sufficient scientific basis for their recommendations. I would urge you to continue to follow nutrition advise from authoritative sources only.

Where Can I Find Out Nutrition Value of A Certain Food? Where can I find out nurtition value of a certain food such as, protein/carbo contain in a chicken/plate of rice? Thanks

From NutriWeb of course. Go to www.nutriweb.org.my and look for a module on food composition. The database has data on nutrient composition for 1000 foods including ready to eat meals. Alternatively you can buy the book from the Institute for Medical Research (03-40402316).

I Would Like To Know More About Importance of Folic Acids. I would like to know more about importance of Folic acids. Is it better to have the combination of this nutrient (eg Folic acid + vitamin B ) or just folic acid solely in a supplement ?

It is definitely more important to have all the B vitamins from food, rather than focusing or concentrating on taking folic acid alone from supplements. Vitamins also rely on each other, as well as other nutrients to function optimally. If you feel you need to take some folic acid supplements, please discuss with a nutritionist or dietitian on how much to take and for how long. I am not able to provide more advise through the e-mail.

Is Low Cholesterol Claims Legal In Malaysia? Is ‘Low Cholesterol’ connection with positive effects in Heart diseases legally accepted in Malaysia?

Your question is not very clear.. But I suppose you mean to ask if an association of low cholesterol and reduced risk to heart disease claim is permitted by the food regulations in Malaysa. The answer is no. Look into the Q & A that we have on our website on the permitted nutrition labelling and claims. Join the Nutrition Society of Malaysia for more information on nutrition in the country and elsewhere.

Please Advise Is There Any Health Drink For Diabetic or Heart Patients? In Malaysia, the food products sold in the market contains high amount of sugars. Need less to say, high sugarg is not very good. But there is no choice. In Japan I could buy a fizzy drink having only 19 cal in a bottle. In other countries Milo is being sold without sugar and one can add sugar as per taste or requirement. At first I will like that your kind of organisation should advise to the govt for taking steps for promotion of food products with less or no sugar. Secondly please advise any health product/powder which can be mixed in milk by a diabetic or heart pataient. Pure malt is good, but the products available in the market all contain sugar. thanks.

Thanks for your suggestion. Indeed, we are already working with the Ministry of Health in promoting less sugar consumption. But the most important thing is the total amount of sugar and other foods that contain calories that are consumed in a whole day. It is also of extreme importance to increase physical activity to use up the calories consumed. There is no special health food or product that is good for diabetic or heart patients. These patients can also consume “normal” foods, according to the food guide pyramid. Individual dietary counselling will have to be carried out with a dietitian.

My 60-years-old mother is having Diabetes, can you explain why these is happening to her ? My mother is 60 years old, she is diabetic and she has hypertension as well. She always complain about pain in the join, numbness on both hands and both feet and lately she has been experiencing night cramp on both of her legs. She has been on medication for the past more than 10 years now. She goes for her appointment once in 4 months at the govt hospitals. Can please explain to me why all these things is happening to her?

I am afraid it is extremely difficult to give you advise on the internet, based on such minimal information you have provided. Furthermore, this is a site for nutrition advise, not medical advise. It is best to discuss her condition thoroughly with the doctors who are treating her. The doctor has to explain to you fully whatever they think is wrong with your mother. You also have a choice of seeking opinion from other doctors.

I would like to know if Cambridge Diet is safe for detoxification and slimming? I would like to know if Cambridge Diet is safe for detoxification purpose? What about as slimming purpose if I use it as meal replacement? There seems to have quite a bit of research done on this product, and quite internationally accepted too. I have read that medical doctors in overseas have use this product for obesity clinics too. Thanks for helping me.

I am not familiar with the use of cambridge diet for detoxification. Is that what it is claimed to do ? You should ask how that happens, ie the mechanism of action. As for the use of cambridge diet for slimming, it is extremely important it is used by a person who has been properly briefed of the basic of nutrition and dietetics. He should also be followed up by a qualified person such as medical doctor or dietitian. Before you buy any of such product, ask for scientific evidence of its effectiveness. You must also bear in mind that anecdotal testimonials from a few individuals do not constitute scientific evidence. The most effective and safe way to loose weight and maintain ideal body weight is by dietary modification and exercise. what is needed is determination to implement a regular programme of the 2 components I mentioned. Visit our website for healthy eating information.

If I Can Get Some Contact Details For My Research ? Hi, I am a student and need some information regarding nutrition values for a research that I am doing. I was wondering if I can get some contact details or phone numbers to any person whom I can contact at the society for further details.

I think the best way to get contacts for your research project is through your department lecturers. I do not think I can simply give out the names of members of the Society to you. Get your lecturers to guide you in your work. When you mention nutrition values, I do not know nutritional values of what. Any way, there is data on nutritional value of foods on the website. You can get quite a bit of information on that.

I Am Looking For A Nutritionist/Dietician For An Interview. I am a PR consultant looking for a nutritionist/dietician for an interview on bone-calcium related information. Hope to get in touch with a nutritionist for further discussion.

There are several of our members who are conducting research on Calcium. Maybe you should contact Ms Winnie Chee Siew Swee, a dietatin and lecturer at UKM, currently doing her PhD on Bone density and calcium supplementation. Please call for more detail.
